Transfer FSMO roles from Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2

In this post we are going to discuss on How to transfer FSMO roles from server 2003 to server 2012 r2 process of transferring FSMO roles are same as we discussed in previous posts. This is a step by step guide on how to migrate server 2003 to server 2012 r2. Server migration is very critical task for system administrator so before doing anything take backup and first test it on test server so you can ensure that you are on safe side.

First install windows server 2012 r2 after installation configure LAN settings than join it on domain

After domain joining login with administrator now we have to create server 2012 r2 as a additional domain controller at the time of adding additional domain controller we get an error that the forest functional level is windows 2000 so first we have to upgrade our forest functional level from 2000 to 2003

To upgrade forest functional level open Active directory Domain and Trusts right click on active directory domain and trusts then click on Raise Forest Functional Level after that select forest functional level and click on raise

After upgrading functional level add additional domain controller than go to run and run command regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll

Then click on ok

Now we have to transfer FSMO roles from server 2003 to server 2012 r2 first run command netdom query fsmo to check who hold all FSMO roles after that open run and type mmc and hit enter

From mmc console go to file and select add or remove snap-ins from add or remove snap-ins select Active Directory Schema and then click on ok

Right click on active directory schema and click on Change active directory domain controller and select server 2012

Again right click on active directory schema and click on operation master than click on change and select server 2012 then click on close.

We had transferred Schema master to check run command netdom query fsmo you can see schema master is transferred on server 2012

Now we are going to transfer Domain naming master to do this open Active directory domains and trusts 

Right click on active directory domain and trusts and change domain controller

Again right click and click on operation master then transfer domain naming master role from server 2003 to server 2012 r2

Run command netdom query fsmo to check how many roles transferred

Now we have to transferred other three roles to do this open Active directory users and computers right click on domain name and click on change domain controller

Again right click on domain name and click on Operation masters 

First transfer RID master click on change and transfer RID role from server 2003 to server 2012

Then transfer PDC and after that transfer Infrastructure master

Run command netdom query fsmo and you can see all roles transferred from server 2003 to server 2012 r2
